Paul Chelimo Shares His 2019 Racing Plans

By Adam Kopet

Paul Chelimo took Monday to Twitter to announce his tentative 2019 racing schedule.

The 2016 Olympic silver medalist and 2017 IAAF World Outdoor Championships bronze medalist at 5,000 meters is expanding his racing resume this year. Earlier this month he made his half marathon debut at the United Airlines NYC Half, finishing third in 1:02:19.

Last year, Chelimo finished the year winning the 3,000 meters at the Continental Cup. He also placed sixth in the 5,000-meter Diamond League final in Brussels, running a personal best 12:57.55.

Now Chelimo is adding the 10,000 meters to his professional resume. He is scheduled to race the 10,000 meters May 30 in Stockholm, his first such race on the track since he won the 10,000-meter title at the 2011 NAIA Outdoor Championships.

Chelimo intends to run the 5,000 and 10,000-meter double at the USATF Outdoor Championships where he will be attempting to qualify for the 2019 IAAF World Outdoor Championships.

However, before then, Chelimo will open his outdoor season May 18 in Shanghai, running the 5,000 meters. He will race twice more over 5,000 meters in June in Rome and Oslo before returning to the U.S. to race the 3,000 meters on June 30 at the Prefontaine Classic, which will be held this year at Stanford while the new Hayward Field is under construction.

In all, Chelimo's tentative schedule includes as many as 10 races on the track this year, spread over the course of six months.
